Abstract as per original application
(English/Chinese):
This project focuses on implementing a novel blockchain smart contract and zero-knowledge proof (BSC-ZKP) model for accurate and secure access to building information models (BIM) for multi-stakeholder collaboration. BIM is a significant industry within architecture, engineering, construction, and operations (AECO), valued at billions of dollars, and mandated in regions like Hong Kong. However, a challenge arises from the disparity between the intricate nature of multi-stakeholder collaboration in BIM and the insecure and simplistic information access methods commonly employed. The conventional federated BIM access approach may not adequately meet the diverse and secure information requirements of collaborating stakeholders. Addressing this issue by refining information access methods tailored to individual project participants’ roles and responsibilities can be intricate and present usability challenges. To tackle this dilemma, the project proposes a novel BSC-ZKP approach. The theoretical innovation of this project lies in the BSC-ZKP model for BIM, where BIM operation records are securely stored in blockchain-based knowledge hubs. This model enables the selection and conversion of historical BIM operation records into knowledge statements, which are further transformed into computational statements and self-executing ZKP logic. By generating proof questions and verifying answers, the BSC-ZKP model facilitates accurate and secure information access to BIM based on project participants’ roles and obligations. A preliminary small-scale pilot study has validated the technological feasibility of the BSC-ZKP model. Researching the BSC is essential for evolving the ZKP model into BSC-ZKP for accurate and secure access to BIM. Leveraging the advanced algorithms of BSC-ZKP offers stakeholders applications such as tailored information access in BIM, user identity verification, and intellectual property protection in multi-stakeholder collaboration. Additionally, seamless interfaces are being developed to integrate BSC-ZKP into mainstream BIM platforms, aiming to apply and assess its effectiveness across various scales and types of construction projects. The primary outcome of this project will be the BSC-ZKP model, a novel, automated, efficient, and cost-effective approach for accurate and secure access to BIM to support multi-stakeholder collaboration. The research results will contribute to expanding the knowledge frontier in accurate and secure information access within the BIM domain. The potential impact of BSC-ZKP extends to enhancing existing BIM practices without disruption, aligning with local government mandates on BIM usage, secure user identity verification, and intellectual property protection. Furthermore, the research outcomes may have implications for engineering informatics, construction management, smart cities, and distributed user management within the evolving landscape of new quality productive forces.
