Abstract as per original application
Zhu Junsheng is one of the Qing-era authorities on Chinese semantics and author of Shuowen Tongxun Dingsheng (hereafter “Dingsheng”), his magnum opus in the field. In the past, scholars who study Dingsheng or Zhu’s linguistic views often restrict themselves to material found within Dingsheng, therefore limiting to a certain extent the breadth and depth of their perspectives. In fact, Zhu is a prolific academic whose scholarly outputs are many. Apart from Dingsheng, Zhu’s entire corpus of outputs as surveyed in recent times by Liu Yuejin numbers well above one hundred, including many treatises with exegeses on the Confucian canon and other classics, such as Liushisi Gua Jingjie, Shangshu Guzhu Biandu, Yili Jingzhu Yiyu, Chunqiu Zuozhuan Zhi Xiaolu, Li Sao Buzhu, etc. Whereas Dingsheng is a lexicographical work; when we take the root (or etymological) meaning as glossed by Zhu in Dingsheng and compare it with or contrast it against his philological exegeses provided as interpretations to individual classics, we often find that the root meaning and the ad hoc meaning found in context are quite different. For example, Dingsheng would gloss the character “贊” (zàn) as ‘to see’, but in Yili Jingzhu Yiyu, Zhu would provide ‘to aid’ as the exegetic interpretation for the same character. The study proposed herein will examine his etymological analyses of Chinese characters and words by comparing them with or contrasting them against how he interprets the same set of characters and words in context through the philological exegeses he gives. Through this work, we shall extrapolate the principles behind his philological scholarship, all the while introducing philological material found in his classical treatises, to allow Zhu’s semantic network to be fully revealed. The proposed study will not only deepen existing understanding of Dingsheng and its value, but also broadening our appreciation of Zhu Junsheng’s linguistic legacy specifically and the wider field of Chinese semantics in general.
