Abstract as per original application
(English/Chinese):
This research project aims to lead the way in establishing and promoting environmental sustainability practices in Hong Kong's art and heritage sector, or GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives, and museums). While different GLAM institutions have their ways of operation and environmental impact, information sharing on points of effect and overlap is currently absent across this sector. This project will provide a much-needed template that identifies key points of practice that can be shared across the sector. Given the looming climate crisis, environmental sustainability has become a critical concern for many industries globally and in Hong Kong. The government has set a goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, driving companies and organizations to reduce waste and resource usage while adopting green technologies and processes. The art industry, being a significant contributor to carbon emissions, must also take responsibility for its environmental impact. From high energy consumption during art events to single-use packaging materials, air travel, logistics, and transportation, the art industry produces a substantial carbon footprint. As the third-largest art market globally, Hong Kong must take practical steps to address this issue. Phase 1 of the project involves a comprehensive stakeholder survey designed to evaluate the GLAM sector's current awareness and attitudes towards environmental sustainability in Hong Kong. This will be followed by 20-30 deep interviews with GLAM representatives. Based on these findings, Phase 2 will develop a Handbook of Best Practices and a digital tool to assist Hong Kong's GLAM institutions in confidently implementing sustainable practices. In Phase 3 of this project, the digital tool and best practices will be rigorously tested through a real-life exhibition in a commercial gallery. Furthermore, a public talk will be held to raise awareness about the critical issue being addressed. The project will strictly adhere to this sequence: data collection, obtaining valid results, creating a useful handbook, conducting an informed case study, carrying out a meaningful experiment, and refining best practices. This project could redefine sustainability in the GLAM sector by developing a holistic model that includes environmental, social, and economic dimensions. It aims to create innovative practices and digital tools, establish new sustainability metrics, and influence policy-making, setting a precedent for interdisciplinary collaboration and broader adoption of sustainable practices. With Hong Kong being an important global art market, this study of an under-researched topic has the scope to influence the practices of local as well as global players in the sector.
